3 Quick Ways to Prepare Your Home For Winter Months

by Kathy Johnston | Oct 27, 2020 | Renting, Packing, Moving | Return|

We are already experiencing colder weather here in the Treasure Valley. Is your house ready for it? Whether you have a rental property or own your home outright, we have a few tips to help you prepare your house for the quickly approaching winter months.

Check Your HVAC

Even though you might not be needing your heater for at least a few more weeks, it’s always smart to make sure that everything is working properly before the Idaho winter sets in rather than having to deal with an issue and not having the option to heat your house. Checking on your HVAC system should be at the very least an annual task, and there are lots of great online guides that you can follow or professionals that you can call if you don’t know where to start. These systems, much like a car, need regular maintenance to keep them running properly and make them last longer.

Test Your Seals

If you’ve already made sure that your HVAC system is working like it’s supposed to, the next thing to do is to check the seals and caulking around your home. Your heater doesn’t do any good when cold air is constantly coming in from under your doors or through your windows, and it could rack up your heating bill. There are a variety of methods that are used to check for air leaks around your home. Don’t skip this one; it’s important and could save you a lot of money in those winter months!

Survey Your Roof

When most people are performing home maintenance, they don’t typically pay attention to their roofs. However, even small damage in your shingles can worsen over the colder days and lead to unwanted (and expensive) leaks. If you are renting your home, this might be a good time to call your property management company so that they can have someone check on it before the rain and snow comes to the Treasure Valley. If you own your home and don’t want to climb up on the roof, you can try to survey it from the street or call a professional to come and take a look.

At Iron Eagle Property Management, we treat your rental property like it’s one of our own. While these are not all of the maintenance tips we recommend, it’s a good place to start as we begin to transition from fall to winter here in Idaho.
